Short answer: A very strong YES!
Suppose your boss says, “Congrats, you are in charge of the company’s 10th Anniversary Party!” What are your first thoughts: Date? Location? Will that new guy in accounting show up alone? How much can I spend?
You are allotted $5,000 to spend, so you make a list:
1. Venue: $1,000
2. Drinks, bartenders, waiters: $1,500
3. Food, rented dishes, rented tables: $1,500
4. DJ: $500
5. Party SWAG, gift for big boss, Uber rides for guests: $500
Why did you make this list? Because you do not want to overspend, but you want to spend enough to create a really nice party. Therefore, even if that new guy shows up with his husband, you can still have a great time.
This is the way you should manage your personal finances. First, determine how much you earn, (2) What items need to be paid each month, (3) How much savings you should make, and (4) How much is left over for food, haircuts and happy hours?
